Preschool Talks About How Sports Can Help to Socialize Your Child

Posted on 05-20-2016

It can be tough being a kid. We go from the safety and security of our mother’s lap to the harsh world of playgrounds, lunchrooms and naptime. Wasn’t it just the worst?! In all seriousness though, there are loads of transitions for preschool children and anything we can do to ease the stress will set them up for future success. Aside from the anxiety of separating from their parents, one of the top challenges for children to overcome is social stress. Some children are naturally comfortable interacting with new people, both adults and their peers, but others struggle quite a bit just to make one or two friends.

One way to boost your child’s self esteem and help them to learn some invaluable social skills is to get them involved in sports. The specific sport isn’t an important factor when they are just starting out, as the socialization aspect is the primary benefit for young children. Additionally, trying out several different sports will allow them to explore many interests before eventually finding the one that suits them best. At Kids R Kids Learning Academy of Circa / Fishhawk, we understand that physical activities are not only beneficial because they provide an outlet for energy and build the body, but participation in sports also socializes children in important ways. Here are a few ways that sports are beneficial and can help to socialize your child:

  • Preschoolers are at a crucial age for learning how to interact and socialize with their peers. Team sports will provide endless opportunities for your child to learn these skills and practice them in many different situations.
  • Another important aspect of socialization is learning how to interact appropriately with adults and authority figures. Sports encourage children to “stretch those new muscles” in relationships with their coaches and officials. This will only reinforce the skills needed to have positive interactions with their teachers.
  • Teamwork and communication are two other positive by-products of a child’s participation in sports. These skills will not only help in school, but throughout life as well.
  • Sports provide an unpredictable environment in which children have to learn to navigate. Each success will help to build their self-esteem and confidence and, conversely, the failures will teach them to persevere towards a goal and accept healthy criticism. In both cases, the praise and support from parents and adults will help them to develop a self-worth, based not solely on performance, but on effort and attitude.

At Kids R Kids Learning Academy of Circa / Fishhawk, we strive to provide as many different learning avenues as possible. We offer several age-appropriate physical activities for preschool children and encourage their learning to continue outside of the classroom. If you are interested in any of the programs we offer or would like to schedule a tour of our facility, give us a call today.
