Preschool Shares Tips on Traveling by Plane with a Toddler in Tow

Posted on 06-22-2016

Summer is right around the corner and you are already making travel plans. As your family vacation plans come together and your flight reservations are made, the visions of getting from Point A to Point B induces sweaty palms and a body shudder. Sure, air travel with a young child can present some challenges, but there’s no need to ditch your dream vacation for a stay-cation just yet. At Kids R Kids Learning Academy of Circa / Fishhawk, we understand how hard you work to create memorable family vacations and we want to help make those memories come to mind without any negativity clouding the picture. In our preschool programs, we are familiar with the challenge of entertaining your toddlers and preschool-aged children, while also providing them with stimulating experiences to encourage their development into wonderful little human beings. To help you prepare for your upcoming travel plans, we’ve put together some tips to make your “air time” a little more fun and a little less stressful.

Use a Packing Checklist. We all know that sinking feeling that comes the millisecond after we realize we’ve forgotten something vital. Whether it’s a favorite toy, blanket or anti-biotics, it can be maddening. Save yourself from the panic and use a list. If you’re not a “professional” list-maker like me, then use someone else’s list. This one is pretty comprehensive and you can make it your own.

Try to Schedule Travel at Convenient Times. Also think, “non-stop”. I know, this sounds a little like chasing a unicorn, but it doesn’t hurt to try. Super early morning flights that mean disrupting everyone’s schedule for arrival at the airport before dawn, or flights that have you landing in a strange place close to midnight should be avoided at ALL cost! Obviously, the golden ticket is one where your flight falls square in the middle of naptime so your sweet angel sleeps his way through. But if you can’t score the gold, settle for anything that allows you to take your time getting to the airport and through security, before a panic attack sets in.

Check TSA Guidelines! These are ever changing, so the rules last summer might be very different now. Many of the restrictions about breast milk, formula and baby food have lessened and allowances for food and drinks for young children are more liberal. Check here to see a current list of TSA rules and see if you qualify for the new pre-screening. Wouldn’t that be a dream come true?!

Know the Luggage Allowances. And pack like a champion! If each traveler is allowed one carry on, then make very good use of those bags. Another thought: trying to pack a week’s worth of clothes for your family of four into one checked bag could put you way over the weight limit. Make sure that you are familiar with your airline’s luggage rules and follow them closely. Additionally, peruse the internet for helpful packing tips to learn how to maximize your space. Here is a good place to start.

Those That Bend Don’t Break. Traveling with young children can be stressful for more reasons than there are stars in the sky, so focus on the big things and let the little ones go. For instance, if you’re in the middle of potty training, consider a very short hiatus and revisit pull-ups. If you have a strict “screen-time” policy for your little one, think about implementing “vacation rules” to lower the number of battles in-flight. And most-importantly, don’t worry about what fellow travelers are thinking. Be as considerate as you possibly can, and then let it go. Things happen, babies cry, toddlers have tantrums and preschoolers have accidents. We’ve all been there and many of us are plenty empathetic to help where we can. Your stress level will transfer to your kiddos and then you’ll really be in the red. Take a deep breathe, remember that there are seasons for everything and start imagining yourself sitting in a beach chair, surrounded by your family, with a tropical drink in your hand.
