Luck of the Irish

St. Patricks’ Day is just around the corner, and there are some great themed activities you can be doing with your preschool-age children to help them get into the Irish spirit this year. At Kids 'R' Kids Learning Academy of Circa Fishhawk we’ve put together a list of some of our favorites to share this year!

● Driving the Rainbow. Break out the paints! For this activity, get some small cars, paints in all the colors of the rainbow, and paper. It might also be a good idea to spread out some newspaper or other protective covering to keep the table clean underneath! Pour a little paint onto small paper plates, and then encourage your kids to drive the cars through the paint, and then onto the paper to make rainbows. Then let them draw in all the characters who are out enjoying the beautiful view!

● Pots of Gold. Start saving all those individual cereal containers now. Give your kids paints, and let them decorate their own “pots”, and then use pipe cleaners, ribbon, or yarn to make the handles. For the “coins” let them cut out the shapes they want to use, and then paint or color them — and since it’s their “gold” let them go with whatever color they want! If you really want to make it beautiful, break out the glitter and let them add some shine to their “gold” before putting it into their pots.

Another pot of gold activity that is great for groups of kids is a variation of “hot potato”. Paint your single-serve cereal container black, and add ribbon or pipe cleaners as a handle. Then fill it with “gold” chocolate coins. Let the kids all sit in a circle and play music, having them pass it around. When the music stops, whichever child is holding the pot gets to take a coin!

● Collage. Make a “shades of green” collage this year! Get out all the shades of green paper you can find, as well as glue, glitter, ribbon, etc. The more textures and shades you can put together, the better. And then let the kids have fun finding ways to put it all together!

● Baking. If it is age-appropriate, have your kids help you in the kitchen and whip up some Irish Soda Bread. There are many recipes all over the Internet, so find one that sounds easy (we like this one – and you can add raisins or other dried fruits to spice it up as well http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/claire-robinson/soda-bread-recipe) and get to baking!

● Become Leprechauns. Find green vests, green hats, even green pants, and if you really want to get into the spirit, even some green-body paint! If your kids made “pots of gold” let them dress up and hide them for you to find, or let them go around and give out “coins” to friends and family.

These are just a few ideas – we would love to hear some of your favorite St. Patrick’s Day themed activities! Share in the comments, and may the Luck of the Irish be with you!
