Helping Your Child Make the Move From Preschool to Kindergarten

Posted on 08-22-2016 | Ben Fernandes

The move from Preschool to kindergarten is a big step. Watching our babies grow up can certainly tug on the heartstrings, but there is something inherently positive about seeing children move through the stages of development, and seeing them revel in the newfound independence that accompanies their progression. If this is the year that your child embarks on their kindergarten journey, you may be curious as to what the new year will entail. At Kids R Kids Learning Academy of Circa/Fishhawk, we know how many questions arise during this transition and we want to make things as easy as possible for you and your child. In an effort to offer some answers to more frequently asked questions, we have put together a list to help you manage this time as best as you can.

  • Do all kids learn in the same way?

In more traditional learning environments, teachers presented a one-size-fits-all curriculum, however time has shown that this approach was quite ineffective. Today’s classroom environments encourage learning through many different methods as children learn in different ways. You are likely aware of your child’s specific learning needs and are the best advocate to share that information with their teacher. Whether your child learns best through visual, auditory or sensory aids, the more you communicate with the teacher, the more equipped they are to encourage your child’s success.

  • Is my child ready? Do they meet the benchmarks?

Where it is important that your child has a solid foundation of skills before they enter kindergarten, the spectrum of expectations is broad. Following are a few of the more significant skills, but you can find a more comprehensive checklist of skills and helpful information here.

-Speaking in complete sentences, using words to express needs/wants

-Able to use a pencil, crayon and scissors with moderate control

-Recognition of basic shapes, colors, letters and numbers, with the ability to count to ten without skipping numbers, and recite the alphabet with minimal skipping of letters

-Knows first and last name and is able to recognize their written name, also making efforts to write it unassisted.

If your child has learned these simple skills, it is a good indication of their readiness to move forward to kindergarten.

  • What if the teacher doesn’t understand my child?

Teachers chose their profession because they want to work with children. They do what they do because they love it, but it doesn’t mean that they have all the answers, all of the time. As the parent, you have the privilege of knowing your child best, including the types of activities that excite them and those that cause frustration. By sharing your “inside” information with their teachers, you decrease the learning curve for the teacher as they work to learn all they can about the students in their care. If you know of something that stimulates your child’s learning or of something that hinders it, that information will be invaluable to share with their teacher.

  • What if my child doesn’t make friends?

One of the best things we can do for our children is to step back and allow them to learn how to work through things on their own. Often times, we will be surprised at how easily they find their own way, once we allow them to spread their social wings. However, if you have concerns about how your child will adjust to their new environment, you could arrange playgroups so your child has the chance to work on their social skills. Kindergarten will provide many opportunities for children to learn how to interact with peers, so introducing your child to playdates and playgroups could give them a head start and boost their confidence.
