Daycare Discusses Summer Fun and How to Keep Cool

Posted on 07-20-2016

Living in Florida means that we know all about outdoor activities, summer sun and mosquitoes. But keeping safe from the dangers that lurk may require more than a little sun block and bug repellant. At Kids R Kids Valrico, our daycare, preschool, before and after school programs offer more than just loads of fun and creative learning. We are always looking for ways to make things better for our kiddos and easier for our parents. As we consider the biggest hurdles for fun in the summer heat, here are some tips we’ve put together to help you keep cool as you enjoy family time in the coming months.

We all know how quickly the weather changes in Florida and sunburn can happen in just a few minutes of direct sun. Even though most people think that a high SPF is the best defense, there are several other options to consider first, leaving sun block as the last resort. EWG.org has loads of information on sun blocks, SPF and which options are best for your specific activities, but here are their tips on how to weather the sun, before slathering on the SPF:

* Wear clothes

Shirts, hats, shorts and pants shield your skin from the sun’s UV rays, reducing risk by 27%. Many swimwear brands now offer swim clothes that provide SPF/UV protection, as well as additional skin coverage for defense against the sun.

* Plan around the sun

Go outdoors in early morning or late afternoon when the sun is lower in the sky.

* Find shade – or make it

Picnic under a tree or take a canopy to the beach. Keep infants in the shade, reducing the risk of multiple burns by 30%. And with the frequent summer showers, a canopy allows your fun to continue, keeping your food and belongings safe and dry.

* Sunglasses are essential

Not just a fashion accessory, sunglasses protect your eyes from UV radiation.

* Check UV Index

The UV Index provides important information to help you plan your outdoor activities in ways that prevent sun overexposure.

* Don’t get burned

Red, sore, blistered skin means you’ve gotten far too much sun. And while Aloe and sunburn sprays offer temporary relief, the long-term risks of skin cancer are increased with each occurrence. The best way to avoid the risk is to ensure that you are always protected to the maximum extent, preventing any damage to the skin.

The bottom line is that sun block is moderately effective, but using it as a first line of defense is far less effective than the other options suggested.
