After School Care Program Shares a First Aid Kit Shopping List to Keep Kids Smiling

Posted on 07-12-2016

Outdoor days in Florida are wonderful. When the sun is shining, our kiddos love to be outside exploring, running, swimming, climbing and sometimes all that activity results in a few bumps and bruises. Whether you’re at the beach, the ball field, at home or far away, kids will be kids and accidents happen. At Kids R Kids, we see how active children are when they are playing with their friends and we always strive to make safety the top priority. To help you brave the summer, with all of the inevitable boo-boos along the way, we compiled a list of First-Aid must-haves to help you put together a Kit like the pros.

There are always ready-made kits available for purchase, but many times, they are sized for marketing and only hold minimal pieces. Sites like RedCrossStore.org offer more comprehensive kits, but it is just as easy to make your own and doing so offers a great opportunity to educate your children about safety and how to properly use First-Aid items. Many of the items are likely to already be hiding in your medicine cabinet, but a quick trip to the store will round off the list in quick time. You can even get your little ones involved by printing out the list, or drawing pictures of a few of the items, and having them help to find everything you need at the store… it’ll be like a miniature scavenger hunt! Taking part in the process helps them feel included and it will also get them accustomed to seeing the first aid supplies before they’re needed in a boo-boo emergency.

Although a few of the items might seem unnecessary at first glance, one accident where you needed something that wasn’t there will convince you that over planning is always better than the alternative. Here is the list of supplies recommended by Red Cross:

  • Antibiotic ointment
  • Antiseptic cleansing wipes (sting free)
  • Hydrocortisone cream
  • Hand sanitizer
  • Aspirin
  • Band-Aids®, assorted sizes
  • Assorted plastic bandages for knuckles, elbows, knees, fingertips
  • Patch bandages, 1-1/2″ x 1-1/2″
  • Instant cold compress
  • Triangular sling/bandage
  • Gauze dressing pads, 3″ x 3″ and 4″ x 4″
  • Gauze roll bandage, 3″
  • First aid tape roll, 3/4″ x 5 yards
  • Thermometer (Red Cross kits come with one-time use thermometers)
  • Latex-free gloves
  • Scissors
  • Tweezers
  • CPR one-way valve face shield

Getting scrapes and bruises is just a small part of being a kid and even though accidents can happen, being prepared to handle them keeps anxieties low and comfort high. We won’t always be there when our kids get hurt, but we will always do our best to make the hurts go away in the best ways possible.
